Tuber Care:

1. Timing and Location

Timing: Direct plant dahlia tubers in mid spring, after the last frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. In the Fraser Valley, this typically falls between late-april and early June due to wetter springs. Dahlias can be started earlier indoors in pots or bags to wake up eyes.

Location:Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dahlias need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day

Soil:Dahlias prefer fertile, well-drained soil. If your soil is heavy clay, amend it with compost, wormcastings, or sand to improve drainage

2. Planting:

Digging the Hole: Dig a hole 4-6 inches deep and wide enough to accommodate the tuber. Amend with compost + worm castings for optimal growth
Placement: Place the tuber in the hole with the "eyes" or growing points facing upward
Spacing: Space dahlia plants 12-18 inches apart
Staking: Dahlias require staking with netting or cages

3. Watering and Care:

Initial Watering:
Water the tubers thoroughly after planting to remove any air pockets and encourage root growth
Subsequent Watering:
Once the sprouts emerge, water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not sogg
Fertilizing:
Dahlias are heavy feeders, so fertilize them regularly with a balanced fertilizer
Deadheading:
Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms
